Hermanus, Walker Bay and Elgin Tour

Discovering the Best of Three Wine Regions in One Day

After a pickup from your hotel, we head along the scenic coastal route via Clarens Drive, enjoying spectacular views of False Bay, and passing through the small fishing villages of Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond.

Our first stop is the quaint seaside town of Hermanus. During whale season (July to November), there is a good chance of spotting Southern Right whales, which come to the bay to breed and rear their young.

We then head away from the coast to the highly regarded maritime district of Walker Bay. Recognised for producing some of the country’s best Pinot Noir, Pinotage, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, we visit one of the premier estates, such as Newton Johnson or Bouchard Finlayson.

Our next stop is Bot River, an unspoilt, down-to-earth village that produces small quantities of exceptional wines and is perfect for lovers of the road less travelled. This is where we stop for coffee, experience genuine country hospitality, and taste the excellent wines of the area.

From Bot River, we continue along the N2, ascending the Houw Hoek Pass to the beautiful Elgin Valley. The aromatic whites and elegant reds produced in this upland area capture the essence of exquisite cool climate wines. We visit either Paul Cluver or Oak Valley, both pioneers of winemaking in the region.

Elgin Railway Market is the perfect place to stop for lunch (for own account). Housed in a converted apple warehouse, this bustling market features excellent vendors selling local produce.

Alternatively, if you are a brandy connoisseur, a tasting and tour of the Oude Molen Distillery in Elgin can be arranged. Their Cape Brandies are among the very best.

Finally, we return to your hotel via the Franschhoek Pass, enjoying more spectacular views to round off the day.
